Day 12: Sailing on the sea

It’s extra glorious today because I find myself on a sailboat with Anna (not to be confused with Amma), and Edmond.

Edmond owns the boat which is moored 100 feet off of Cowboy Beach. Anna, who was born and raised in the USVI, picks me up and together we swim out to the boat. Anna is worried about getting in the “frigid” water. The water is at least 80 degrees. Only a local could be so used to the warmth here.

The captain, Edmond, is waiting for us on the boat with his stereo playing and a tumbler in his hand. We unleash from the mooring ball and head towards one of the largest turtle nesting grounds in the world – Sandy Point. Sandy Point is closed this time of year to protect the turtles so we can only get close to it by boat. By car, it’s about 20 minutes south of Feather Leaf Inn.

Edmond, I learn, is a retired actor who spent most of his years on the come-up in New York City. Anna, a local, is a homeopathic healer and property owner.

Edmond tells us about his most prolific role on Broadway, nestled in with some politics, we are all in agreement of who we do and don’t support.

Approaching Sandy Point, the sand appears as bright as an iceberg in the arctic. A best-kept secret, these beaches are the second-largest turtle nesting grounds in the world behind the Great Barrier Reef.

This island is filled with sweet little secrets, complex history, and splendor.

On the way back, Edmond tacks, as I replenish his tumbler with rum and pass it back.

This is the most action I’ve had on the water in a while and I’m anxious for more.
